The implementation of Decision No. 1355 / QD-TTg dated 12/9/2017 of the Prime Minister promulgating the plan for the implementation of the Law on Legal Aid, following the conference in Hanoi, The Ministry of Justice held a conference to implement the Law on Legal Aid in the South on October 5th. Vice Minister Ngoc Nguyen Khanh chaired the meeting. Attending the conference were leaders of the Department of Justice, leaders of legal aid centres in the southern provinces (from Danang to the south), Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, Association of Orange Agent Victims in Ho Chi Minh City; Legal Aid providers from Legal Aid Centre in Ho Chi Minh City and a number of law firms.
On the morning of June 20, 2017, with 100% of delegate approvals, The National Assembly adopted the Law on Legal Aid (amended), consisting of 8 chapters, 48 articles with many new important contents.
On November 11, at the meeting hall, theVietnamese National Assembly has an open discussion on the draft Law on Legal Aid (amended). Although this was the first discussion on this issue, it attracted many positive attitudes from the Members of the National Assembly. After listening to various opinions, the Minister of Justice, Mr. Le Thanh Long explained some key issues in order to clarify the content of the Bill.
On 13th – 14th June 2016, in Nha Trang, with the support of USAID programme “Governance of Inclusive Growth” (GIG), the Ministry of Justice organized a Consultative Workshop on the Draft of amended Law on Legal Aid under the chair of Deputy Minister of Justice - Mr. Nguyen Khanh Ngoc and Director General of National Legal Aid Agency - Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh.
Under the support of “Governance of Inclusive Growth” (GIG) Program which is funded by USAID, the project “Supporting Gender Assessment of the Law on Legal Aid 2006 from CEDAW and Human Rights Perspective” funded by UNWOMEN, on 6th – 7th June 2016, the National Legal Aid Agency (NLAA) organized the “Workshop on Survey Report on Legal Aid needs and the Implementation of the 2006 Law on Legal Aid”.
According to the 2016 Law-, Ordinance- Making Programs of Vietnamese National Assembly, the amended Law on Legal Aid will be submitted at the 2nd session of 14th National Assembly. Ministry of Justice (MoJ) is in charged of leading the Drafting Committee of this Law. As a body of MoJ, National Legal Aid Agency (NLAA) plays a crucial role as the Standing Editing Team.
On the 1st June, 2015 Prime Minister signed the Decision 749/QD-TTg issuing the reform project on legal aid. The National Legal Aid Agency, Ministry of Justice introduces some main contents of this Project.
With the support of the Embassy of Ireland, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and Justice Partnership Program (JPP), the Ministry of Justice convened an international conference in Hanoi from 16th to 17th June, 2015 to review 8 years of implementing the Law on Legal Aid.
The National Legal Aid Agency of Vietnam (NLAA) convened a one-day conference on December 5, 2014 to solicit input for a project aimed at reforming the Law on Legal Aid.
